Adult/college writers residing in Michigan are invited to create original ekphrastic poems based on one of ten selected works of art from the Muskegon Museum of Art’s permanent collection.  Cash prizes, Museum memberships, and gift certificates will be awarded to the winning poets.

The Art Talks Back Ekphrastic poetry contest combines two art forms, the visual and the literary and is a way for visitors to creatively give new stories or voices to the MMA’s beloved permanent collection. Last year, over 60 contestants entered the annual competition. Cash prizes, Museum memberships, and gift certificates will be awarded to the winning poets. This year, the Poetry Society of Michigan again provides the first place cash award of $200. The competition ends on March 29, 2018. The awards ceremony and poetry reading will be held April 19.

Art Talks Back! is sponsored by the Poetry Society of Michigan.

This project is funded in part by the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
