This exhibition of stainless, machines, and bronze sculptures, along with sketches and technical drawings, introduces MMA visitors to the work of Chicago native Caroline Lee, who has lived and worked in Paris since 1958. Lee’s sculptures, formed both organically and with machine tooling, are dynamic and aggressive, often with soaring elements whose origins can be found in her memories of long summers in Holland, Michigan, as a child. “Even though I am a wanderer from Paris,” Lee says, “my heart returns to Michigan to be re-nourished, to survive, to persevere.” Featured in the exhibition will be Projectile, an important early work from 1971 that Lee gifted to the MMA in honor of the Museum’s 100th anniversary.
