The Muskegon Museum of Art will kick off a year-long centennial celebration by exhibiting highlights from its collection reinstalled in new ways to promote fresh perspectives for visitors. The First 100 Years, a set of four exhibitions throughout the museum that highlight masterworks from the extensive museum collections, includes Pictures of the Best Kind, Portfolios, Series, and Collections; Contemporary Works; and Tiny Treasures.  The First 100 Years opens to the public at 10:00am, Sunday, December 11, 2011 and will run through January 29, 2012.

Pictures of the Best Kind

L.C. & Margaret Walker Galleries

This grand display of the seminal works that define the excellence of the MMA's collection includes paintings, sculpture, glass, and works on paper acquired during the Museum’s first century, reinstalled in new ways to promote fresh perspectives. Many exceptional works that are less frequently seen, in addition to all-time favorites, will inform the wealth and diversity of acquisitions that now set the stage for energetic collecting in the MMA’s second century. Underwritten by DTE Energy Foundation with additional support from the Van Kampen Boyer Molinari Charitable Foundation.

Bettye Clark Cannon Gallery, Theodore & Joan Operhall Gallery
Related artwork groupings, including many rarely seen works on paper, are showcased in this exhibition.

Contemporary Works

Robert D. & C. Corcoran Tuttle Gallery
Examples of the best contemporary craft-based art collected during the MMA’s first 100 years, including studio glass and other three-dimensional works. 

Tiny Treasures

Through February 19, 2012

Ernest & Marjorie Cooper Gallery

An array of small art objects, ranging from prints, paintings, and drawings to sculptures, studio glass, and more.

Special 100th Year Publications

 

A souvenir wall calendar commemorating the 1912 centennial year is now available for purchase in the MMA Gift Store. The large, full-color calendar features 12 of the most prized artworks in the Museum’s collection.

Calendar publication is underwritten by Hooker DeJong Architects and Engineers.

 

Pictures of the Best Kind: The First One Hundred Years, an illustrated book of Museum history by Marilyn Andersen, will be released in May 2012.  Information about pre-orders will be announced soon.
