A grant from Michigan Humanities Council has been awarded to the MMA to help fund the Museum's UP FROM THE BOTTOMS film screening & discussion on September 30.
The award-winning documentary, Up from the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream, tells of the massive migration of African Americans from the rural South to the prosperous North during the war years and beyond. Muskegon, Michigan was one of those northern towns that drew many African Americans in the pursuit of a better life. After the film, a panel consisting of Rob Schaub; Jim Schaub; James Martin; and Dr. Ben Wilson, Professor of Africana Studies at Western Michigan University, —all part of the creation of this film—will discuss the making of Up from the Bottoms and answer questions. The film will be shown at 6:00 pm. The panel discussion will follow at 7:00 pm.
This program is funded in part by Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
