West Shore Graphic Arts Society, an auxiliary group of the Muskegon Museum of Art formed in 1991, encourages the study and collecting of artworks on paper,
including prints, watercolors, drawings, pastels, photographs, and mixed media; using the Museum's collection of works on paper for study and example. These areas of interest are reflected in the wide variety of educational and social programs that are offered each year at the Museum and off-site, including visits to artists’ studios and private collections. With over 50 members, WSGAS with MMA's help provides monthly programs that include seminars, lectures, training and working artist demonstrations.
Most WSGAS programs are free and open to the public. Some programs are open only to WSGAS members. Each year a print is commissioned by the Society and made available to members at modest cost. New members are always welcome. WSGAS membership is $15 per person or $25 per couple with a Museum membership. Muskegon Museum of Art membership is a prerequisite for WSGAS membership. FALL PROGRAMS
The following WSGAS programs are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.
Saturday, September 15, 10:00 am – noon
Print Making Workshop: Pochoir
Muskegon Museum of Art classroom
Pochoir (French for stencil) has been a printmaking method used since the late 1800s, yet few are familiar with the technique today. Join WSGAS member Mat Moore as he talks about the history of this technique, its place in modern Pop Art, and how he uses it in his work. Mat’s talk will also include a demonstration of his method. And of course, no workshop would be complete without some hands-on fun!
Wednesday, October 10, 6:00–7:30 pm
Reception: Brett Colley Exhibition
Location: Overbrook Gallery, Muskegon Community College
Last season’s guest lecturer, Brett Colley, will be returning to Muskegon for the opening of his exhibition at the MCC Overbrook Gallery. Brett is a Grand Rapids printmaker and a GVSU professor. Take advantage of this opportunity to see the artist’s work first hand! The reception will start at 6:00 pm, followed by a talk by the artist at 6:30 pm in the Overbrook Theater.
Saturday, November 10
Field Trip: Chicago!
Join WSGAS board members as we tour the Windy City to find places of interest to the Graphic Arts Society. While participants will be responsible for finding their own transportation to Chicago, we do encourage you to use our contact information below to make car-pooling arrangements and see what alternative forms of transportation might be available. Registering with the group is also encouraged to facilitate a meeting place. A registration list will be kept in the MMA Gift Store.
