THE JUROR
Joe Bova
was born in Houston in 1941. Between high school and university he served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He earned a BFA from the University of Houston and a master's degree in fine arts from the University of New Mexico. He is a professor emeritus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and served as the Director of the Ohio University School of Art from 1990 until 1997. Awarded the SAF/NEA Fellowship in 1985 and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art Fellowship in 1980, he has been a visiting artist at many schools. He is also a Fellow and Past President of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) and is an elected member of the International Academy of Ceramics, Geneva. Bova was awarded a fellowship from NCECA for a residency at the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemet, Hungary in the fall of 2004. His work is published in The Art and Craft of Clay by Susan Peterson and The History of American Ceramics by Elaine Levin, The Penland Book of Ceramics, and the April 2004 issue of Ceramics Monthly. His work has been included in nearly 200 exhibitions since 1970. He selected the artists and wrote the essay for the Lark Books publication, 500 Animals in Clay, 2006. His home and studio are in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and he continues a position with Ohio University.
